Blink as you walk up Rush Street and you may miss the gangway leading back to the entrance of this well-established Near North jazz club. Once inside, the shoebox of a room is dense and intimate, with candlelit tables, a small balcony section and a perpetual haze of cigarette smoke. Backroom offers a cocoon-like setting similar to the feeling one gets at the Green Mill, but without quite the caliber of music found at that Uptown gem.

 

Opinion: Still, the local acts that populate the stage at Backroom until the wee hours of the morning are quality local players, and the warm embrace of the room lends an air of immediacy to the after-hours proceedings.

Tip:Parking is suicidal! If you've never been in a cab, this would be a good inaugural trip.
