[edit] What is an IQ?

IQ, or the intelligent quotient, refers to the measure of a person’s mental abilities. IQ tests are used to predict educational achievement. These tests, which are comprised of several standardized questions aimed at measuring intelligence, have become exceedingly popular for progress in school and for college admissions. IQ tests are used to diagnose children with special needs, such as learning disabilities.

[edit] The First IQ Test

The first IQ test was developed by French psychologist Alfred Binet in 1905. He designed these tests to identify children who would need to be sent to special schools where they would receive more individual attention.

IQ tests are not a good measure of a person's true intelligence

[edit] What can these tests measure?

I believe not all intelligence can be measured.
+ -

* IQ tests seek to measure mathematical and spatial reasoning, logical ability, and language understanding.
* IQ tests can not measure things like life experiences, wisdom or personal qualities like diligence, integrity or devotion.
* Some things can negatively impact IQ score, including malnutrition, maternal addiction, personal genetic history and severely deprived, neglectful, or abusive environments.
* Practice can increase scoring in IQ tests.

Tip: Some IQ tests are prone to racial bias.

Tip: Despite the shortfalls, an IQ score is considered a fairly good predictor for school performance and may also predict fairly well the degree to which a person may be successful in occupations, according to the American Psychological Association.
