Tip: This is an interesting article for parents to see their kid's school's lunch program with nutrition data.
School Menu Program

Tip: Look over the cafeteria menu with your child. Ask them what they uually eat when they buy the food at the cafeteria. Do they eat the veggies or jsut the tator tots? Talk to them about their choices. Recommend items that are healthier, but be willing to allow your child to buy favorite lunch items occasionally.

Tip: Ask about foods like chips, soda, and ice cream. Are they buying anything from the vending machine? It is important to know how your kid is eating at school to account for it when they get home and want snack and dinner.

Tip: Encourage your child to pack a lunch, at least occasionally. If you do it right, this can help you to ensure that your child is getting a nutritious midday meal. Or at least pack them a snack so they do not have to buy from the vending machine.

Tip: Sharing food can be really problematic for kids with food allergies or sensitivities.
Warnings about food sharing

Tip: It is really important to ask kids what they like and do not like in their lunches, because if you pack them food they like, they are less likely to trade it for 'junkier' food.

Tip: Sharing food also causes colds and flus to spread like wildfire. Kids share beverages, candy and even sports bars often and can easily catch each others germs.
