[edit] Opinion: Teen Therapy

While it is perfectly normal for a teenager to pull away from his/her parents, he or she still has need of adult guidance. Teens often begin to challenge their parents’ judgment, beliefs and rules. During this time, a trained professional can help him/her wade through the maze of confusion that accompanies this time of life. Teen therapy is aimed at helping teens better understand their problems (or their perception of problems).

Opinion: School counselors can also be good resources for teens and families that are having issues.

[edit] Why go to Therapists?

When teens are going through a rough time, such as family troubles or problems in school, they might feel more supported if they talk to a therapist. They may be feeling sad, angry, or overwhelmed by what's been happening - and need help sorting out their feelings, finding solutions to their problems, or just feeling better.

Opinion: Having an adult figure, other than the parent can be helpful for teens when they need advice, but are afraid of getting into trouble.

Teens may seek therapy when:
* They feel sad, depressed, worried, shy or just stressed out
* They are dieting or overeating to extremes (eating disorders)
* They are dealing with an attention problem (ADHD) or a learning problem (learning disorders)
* They are coping with a chronic illness (such as diabetes or asthma) or a new diagnosis of a serious problem such as HIV, cancer or a sexually transmitted disease (STD)
* They are dealing with family changes such as separation and divorce, or family problems such as alcohol or drug abuse
* They are trying to cope with a traumatic event, death of a loved one, or worry over world events
* They would like to get rid of a habit, like nail biting, hair pulling, smoking, spending too much money, or getting hooked on medications, drugs, or pills
* They would like to sort out problems like managing anger or coping with peer pressure
* They want to build self-confidence or figure out ways to make more friends

[edit] Therapy for Teens coping with Divorced Parents

It is important to remember that even the most competent and confident-appearing teen is, at some level, devastated by the divorce of his/her parents and the dissolution of the family. While most teens adapt well, a significant percentage are especially vulnerable to developing mental health problems, suffering impaired educational attainment, and experiencing difficulties later on in life with socioeconomic and family well-being.

Opinion: A therapist can help teens express and work out their complicated emotions in a safe environment. Some therapists may also conduct counseling groups for teens, which helps decrease the sense of aloneness in this new life problem.

[edit] Problems for Adopted Teenagers

Adopted children as they grow and mature sometimes need help resolving their feelings about not growing up with their birth parents. Adopted children who were adopted when they were older, who were adopted after they experienced abuse or neglect, or who were adopted from another country may have other feelings and behaviors that sometimes become difficult for families to manage on their own. Needing outside help after adoption is normal, and many adoptive families seek post-adoption assistance.
