What is a Wiki?: An Editable Book

A wiki is a website which allows users to add and edit content collectively. Many like to think of a wiki as an editable book, or a book written by numerous authors.

An example that most people are familiar with is Wikipedia. If you imagine an encyclopedia with many pages and subsections, Wikipedia has simply put the encyclopedia online and made all of the pages editable, so anyone can add information to a page.

A wiki is like an editable book online. A wiki usually has many chapters, headings and subheadings just like a book. Although with a wiki, anyone can add or change any of the pages of the book—everyone is an author.

What is the RRules Wiki? An Editable Parenting Guide

The RRules Wiki is an editable Parenting Guide and Teen handbook, meaning all of the RRules articles relate to parents and teenagers.

What makes the RRules Wiki better?

“Better” is maybe not the best word, but we believe that a wiki is better than blogs, chat rooms and forums for parents and teens who are seeking advice and other people’s opinions on certain topics. Below we have listed a few reasons why the RRules Wiki is unique.

Difference #1: Everyone is an Author

Unlike traditional parenting books, blogs or websites, when users read the RRules WIki for advice and information they are getting more than one person’s opinion and ideas. They are reading advice from an entire community! What we like to call community parenting.

We believe the information in the RRules Wiki is more helpful because it has been collaborated upon for the best possible results. The advice is a result of many people’s experiences instead of just one as with a traditional parenting book or blog.

Difference #2: Fact and Opinion

The RRules Wiki is unlike a real Encyclopedia because as well as fact (which is everything on an article without a symbol), we include users opinions (always indicated by the word Tip: Advice: Warning: or  Opinion: ).

There is very little ‘fact’ to parenting and RRules.com is a place that parents and teens can come to collaborate with other community members to find the best information and advice. To differentiate between fact and opinion, all opinions will be marked as a Tip:. If another user disagrees with this tip, they can add a vote mechanism and vote against it.

For more see RRules Article Ethics and RRules Formatting Manual

Difference #3: Voting

Because we encourage many different types of parenting styles and teen ideas, we want there to be many different types of

Tips: or opinions on the articles. We do not want users to delete other people’s opinions if they disagree, so we have created a voting mechanism. Many users can quickly add their opinion with a simple “agree” or “disagree” click and this is easily shown to others.

There is no better way to express your ideas and see what other people find useful or successful in their own households.

Difference #4: Condensed and Organized

When you read a blog post and then the discussion that follows, it is often very difficult to follow the comments, when they were written and who and what they are referring to.

A wiki organizes other user’s opinions and ideas into a single article. Also instead of having multiple chat room lines or blog discussion threads repeating “I agree!” or “I do not think that is right” or “Great post” they can easily share their opinion with a vote and see if other people agree with a simple percentage display.

How to Use the RRules Wiki:

Find a Topic:

1) Users can use Keywords in the search field at the top of each page to find an article or issue of interest.
Image:SearchField.png
2) Users can go to the Wiki, by clicking on the tab that says “Wiki” and look through the Portals (like Chapters) for a subject that interests them.

Changing an Article:

1) Voting The first, and easiest way to change an article is if the article has a ‘Vote’ plug-in. If you see a vote box, you must be logged in as either a Teen or Parent User (Floater Users cannot vote) and simply click thumbs up or down if you agree or disagree. The vote percentage will be displayed if you put your mouse over the box as percent of teens who agree, or percent of parents who agree. (Remember only one vote per user).

2) Editing an Article Once you have found an article that you think is interesting and you would like to add your own tip, website or information all you have to do is
-click: “Edit” tab at the top of the article,
Image:EditArticle.png
-make your changes
-Then click ‘Save Changes’ at the bottom of the article when you have written your changes.
That’s it! If you want to make more detailed changes, read below or look at our simple instructions for other cool features at the RRules Formatting Manual and be sure to follow our RRules Article Ethics.

How to Create an Article:

If you cannot find an article on your topic and you either have ideas you want to add, or you want others to start writing about your topic, you have to create an article. (make sure to really search to make sure that the article you would like to create does not already exist)

1) Click on the “Write an Article” link on the left side of the screen under ‘Toolbox.’

Image:CreateArticle.png

2) When you click this, a screen will come up to ‘Tag the article’, tag the article if you think it is specifically for teens or parents, but most articles will be for ‘Everyone’

3) Title the article. Remember to title it something that will be easily searchable by other users.

4) Then hit “Create Article” button and you will be taken to a blank page.

5) Like above, start typing and then hit “Save Changes” when you are done.

Some Additional Features:

Here are a few easy features you can add to an article page, again we have more explanations at RRules Formatting Manual. To add these plug-ins simply paste in this text.

To Add a Vote Plug-in:

' <vote1>Type Vote Statement here </vote1>

-you must type in a positive, yes or no statement, like “I like this vote mechanism”
-Make sure to change the number to which number of votes it is on the page. For instance if there was already another vote plug-in on the page and this is the second one down the page you would put:

0
Type vote statement
